University of Maribor
GeoLab operates within the Department of Geography at the University of Maribor as a platform for interdisciplinary spatial research, education, and the development of practical solutions to environmental and territorial challenges. The laboratory brings together researchers and experts from different fields to explore the spatial dimensions of natural and social processes. By combining geographic approaches with spatial analysis and geoinformation technologies, GeoLab seeks to better understand patterns and processes that shape ecosystems, regions, and human environments.
GeoLab connects researchers, educators, planners, policy practitioners, local communities, and students in collaborative research and knowledge exchange. Its activities include interdisciplinary research, spatial analysis, teaching and training, and consultancy for public and private stakeholders. Through these activities, the laboratory supports the transfer of scientific knowledge to local, regional, and international contexts and contributes to more informed spatial planning and sustainable development.
GeoLab activities focus on the following thematic areas:
Spatial analysis
GIS-based analysis, spatial modelling, cartography and mapping, remote sensing...
Natural resources
Sustainable management of soils, water, vegetation, including agroecology, ecoremediation, nature-based solutions, climate change...
Land use
Land-use dynamics, landscape structure, processes shaping cultural landscapes and spatial development...
Regional development
Urban and regional planning, sustainable regional development, quality of life, sustainable communities...
Education
Teaching and training, spatial literacy, life-long learning, experiential learning, awareness raising, digitalization...
Participatory research
Participatory mapping, community-based research, analyses of social dimensions of space and place...
Critical perspectives
Geopolitical processes, feminist and queer topics, power relations...

The project focuses on spatial patterns and future risks of tick-borne diseases in Slovenia under climate change. It combines GIS spatial modelling, environmental and socio-economic data analysis, and climate scenarios to identify current disease hotspots and predict future infection risk. The project brings together researchers from several disciplines, including geography, ecology, biology, medicine, and computer science. In addition to geospatial modelling, the project will develop an app that enables citizen reporting of tick encounters and supports public awareness and decision-making related to disease prevention.
RailMB is a student project exploring the potential of developing a suburban railway system as a sustainable mobility solution for the Maribor region. The project combines GIS spatial analysis, fieldwork, and interviews with users to examine railway infrastructure, accessibility, travel behavior, and the spatial potential for strengthening rail-based public transport. The project is carried out by a student team from the study programmes Geography, Psychology, Logistics, and Web Technologies, in collaboration with Maribor Cycling Network.
The project explores innovative approaches to strengthening climate resilience in urban communities facing the impacts of climate change. It focuses on the use of geographic games and gamification as tools for citizen engagement and education, combined with spatial analysis and GIS to better understand climate-related risks and support participatory urban planning. The project is carried out in collaboration with Iowa State University, particularly the GeoGames Lab, and includes joint research, academic exchanges, and publications. Its aim is to develop and evaluate methods for engaging citizens through geographic games and to support the development of strategies that contribute to more climate-resilient urban communities.
The Alumni Club connects former students who completed their undergraduate or master’s studies at the Department of Geography, University of Maribor. It provides a platform for maintaining long-term connections between graduates, the department and GeoLab.
Alumni networks are valuable for strengthening professional and academic communities. By joining the Alumni Club, graduates can stay connected with colleagues, exchange professional experiences, and follow new research and educational activities. The network also creates opportunities for collaboration in research and projects, guest lectures, mentoring, internships, and career development. In this way, the Alumni Club helps bridge academic knowledge and professional practice while supporting the continued development and visibility of geography.
Join the Alumni Club by filling out this form.
GeoLab welcomes collaboration with researchers, institutions, public authorities, businesses, and civil society organizations interested in addressing spatial, social and environmental challenges.
Collaboration may include joint research projects, student projects and internships, expert consultations, lectures and workshops, field work, data sharing, and the development of innovative solutions for sustainable regional development. If you see potential for cooperation—whether at the professional, educational, project, or media level—you are warmly invited to get in touch.
